Disk-averaged synthetic spectra of Mars.

چکیده
The principal goal of the NASA Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) and European Space Agency's Darwin mission concepts is to directly detect and characterize extrasolar terrestrial (Earthsized) planets. This first generation of instruments is expected to provide disk-averaged spectra with modest spectral resolution and signal-to-noise. Here we use a spatially and spectrally resolved model of a Mars-like planet to study the detectability of a planet's surface and atmospheric properties from disk-averaged spectra. We explore the detectability as a function of spectral resolution and wavelength range, for both the proposed visible coronograph (TPFC) and mid-infrared interferometer (TPF-I/Darwin) architectures. At the core of our model is a spectrum-resolving (line-by-line) atmospheric/surface radiative transfer model. This model uses observational data as input to generate a database of spatially resolved synthetic spectra for a range of illumination conditions and viewing geometries. The model was validated against spectra recorded by the Mars Global Surveyor-Thermal Emission Spectrometer and the Mariner 9-Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer. Results presented here include disk-averaged synthetic spectra, light curves, and the spectral variability at visible and mid-infrared wavelengths for Mars as a function of viewing angle, illumination, and season. We also considered the differences in the spectral appearance of an increasingly ice-covered Mars, as a function of spectral resolution, signal-to-noise and integration time for both TPF-C and TPFI/ Darwin.

Are oxidized shergottite-like basalts an alternative to ‘‘andesite’’ on Mars?
[1] We acquired new thermal emission spectra of oxidized synthetic Martian meteorite-like basalts for comparison to Martian surface spectra acquired by the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS TES). We find that true thermal emission spectra of the oxidized basalts do not provide good spectral matches to the Martian spectra. By contrast, previous biconical reflectance spectra...
متن کاملESTIMATING THE STRONG-MOTION OF THE DECEMBER 26, 2003 BAM (IRAN), EARTHQUAKE USING STOCHASTIC TECHNIQUES
Abstract : The main objective of this study is estimating the strong motion for the Bam region using the stochastically based seismological models. The two widely used synthetic techniques namely point-source and finite-fault were utilized incorporating the source-path and site parameters into simple function. The decay factor kappa was estimated based on the data obtained from recorded stron...

In this paper, a statistical method is proposed to evaluate the 4 physical properties of surface materials on Mars from hyperspectral images 5 collected by the OMEGA instrument aboard the Mars express spacecraft. 6 The approach is based on the estimation of the functional relationship F be-7 tween some observed spectra and some physical parameters. To this end, a 8 database of synthetic spectra...
متن کاملLow-temperature and low atmospheric pressure infrared reflectance spectroscopy of Mars soil analog materials
Infrared reflectance spectra of carefully selected Mars soil analog materials have been measured under low atmospheric pressures and temperatures. Chemically altered montmorillonites containing ferrihydrite and hydrated ferric sulfate complexes are examined, as well as synthetic ferrihydrite and a palagonitic soil from Haleakala, Maui. Reflectance spectra of these analog materials exhibit subtl...
متن کاملModeling the Spectral Signatures of Accretion Disk Winds: A New Monte Carlo Approach
Bipolar outflows are present in many disk-accreting astrophysical systems. In disk-accreting cataclysmic variables (CVs), these outflows are responsible for most of the strong features in the ultraviolet spectra of these systems. However, there have been few attempts to model these features quantitatively. Here, we describe a new, hybrid Monte Carlo/Sobolev code, which allows us to synthesize t...
